Perfect Golf and Macs

Postby rbarthle17 » Thu Feb 18, 2016 12:52 pm

So I just wanted to take a moment and share that PG is not only for Windows!! If you have a Mac, you can be part of the fun as well.

Here are the specs on my Late 2013 iMac 27" that plays PG just fine:

3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 755M 1024 MB

Now I realize that the pure RAM is higher than most will have (I do software development and have to run multiple OSes and servers daily), but whereas I have to boot into Win10 via Bootcamp (and thus close out all my OS X programs) to play TGC there is a huge benefit to just being able to fire up PG on OS X and get some golf in quickly.

I use High settings, and play it windowed at 1600x900. I fired up Quartz Debug to see the active frame rates and it reported over it's highest number (90 fps) at times with no effect to my gameplay.

Just something to consider.

I have a Mac Mini sitting around that uses the Intel HD 4000 card. I will fire that up add see how it does for me. That is definitely lower end than the iMac but could give insight to a more affordable option.

As I learn Mac-specific tidbits I'll update this post.

Mac Mini Test Results

206 GHz i7 quad core
16 GB RAM
Intel HD 4000 1GB

My baseline for "playable" is "can motion of any kind be seen without choppiness?" To achieve this, I had to go all the way down to Very Low settings. Basically it's like Minecraft and Golf had a baby.

Bottom line, don't do it.

Graphics help

Are you trying to tweak to find the sweet spot in terms of the best gameplay your graphics card will support? Use Quartz Debug to help.

Not Mac-specific, but if you are struggling with game performance, Zmax has a tip that worked wonders by itself:

While PG will work on a iMac, the OGT interface will not.
