Align Overlay with elevation map?

Postby james474789 » Thu Dec 07, 2017 7:12 am

I have followed some of the excellent tutorials on this forum and perfect parallel to start working in Course Forge. My aim is to create simulator versions of courses I play frequently.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQQ3hfjMsI0

I have managed to get hold of lidar data for one of these courses (Falkirk UK), and using VT Builder I can get the terrain into Unity. I needed to use sas.planet to get aerial imagery and they appear to align in VT Builder. However, when I import the files into unity they are clearly off.

Files are here:
https://1drv.ms/f/s!AtooZYq7lKxzgRGaUzKUiYytx886

I am not sure how this is happening when it looks good inside VT Builder?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I have no idea how to fix your problem with the overlay beings I don't use VT builder. But I did the course using global mapper and here is the unity package with the Bing overlay and CF already installed. Just download double-click on the unity packet once it loads just double click on the unity scene in projects. If for some reason you still don't see the terrain. Just double-click on terrain in the hierarchy, and it should center itself in the scene window

The elevation throughout the course looks great. By the looks of it, the bunkers must be fairly shallow on that course. Some seem to stick out better than others.

Thanks for doing that, it is SO much better than my attempt. The terrain looks great. I will now see if I can map some of the holes out and get them into the game.

Much appreciated...

You're welcome, I see there's a few more courses in that area that the lidar covers. One is Falkirk Tryst Golf Club, the other two are Bonnybridge Golf Club and Glenbervie Golf Course. If you're interested in any of them just let me know.

Hi Justin,

I went though all tutorals and made a few holes and I'm interested in trying to make my homecourse using LIDAR. Do you know how I could get my hands on the LIDAR for Westwood Country Club in St. Louis Missouri?

It's on the USGS website. I just checked and there is lidar for the course. Are you wanting to do it yourself? Or do you want me to go ahead and do it for you? Just let me know either way. If you want to get the lidar yourself I can do a quick video for you on how to download it over on their site If you don't know how.

Anything you can do for me would be great as I'm pretty new to this. If you download it and send me a link, how do I then get it into Unity for me to start working with it? Is there a video somewhere on that too or is it straightforward? If you would prefer, you could tell me how to download it myself. Thanks!

Okay, I went ahead and did a Unity pack where it's all set to go. Here's the download for the unity pack. I will do a video for you, showing how to install it. I will also do a short video on how to use the USGS website to look up lidar. That way if anyone's interested in going on looking at certain areas, they'll know if there is lidar available. Of course there are other sites as well. Like NOAA and some states have their own websites and portals. Actually, Missouri has one but it seems to be the same as USGS, website. I did start to download the lidar from their site, but it was unbearably slow. Anyhow, here's your course.

You're welcome,By the way that course looks pretty nice. I went to the website and they don't give out much information so I'm assuming it's probably pretty exclusive?

Yes, it's a nice private course. Bermuda grass and lots of elevated greens. Come to St. Louis in the summer and we can play sometime.

Afternoon,
Would you be able to send me the same for Glenbervie please?

Additionally, are you able to send me the same for Lundin Links in Fife (https://www.lundingolfclub.co.uk/)? I think the lidar data covers this area as well.

Thanks,

I didn't find any lidar for either one of those Courses from the site I normally use. But I did find another site that shows more lidar for Scotland, so I will have to mess around with that site. If you have the lidar just send it to me like you did last time.

Okay, I have the lidar for Glenbervie Golf Course. It was on the lidar you sent previously. I don't believe the other course is covered though.

Thanks, lidar data for Glenbervie is on the same tile as Falkirk and Falkirk Tryst:
https://1drv.ms/f/s!AtooZYq7lKxzgR4Tky7_DU9oh7HK

For Lundin links I think it is spread across 2 tiles:

The site I used to get this data was:

That's the same website I was looking at. I'll take a look at Lundin links. But I don't believe the lidar goes around the bend far enough.

The lidar for Lundin links doesn't cover the complete course. You would have to hands sculpt some of it. Are you still interested in it?
